Beyond LA/LA
This is a mapping project that takes a closer look at Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. PST LA/LA is an "exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles". This project takes a critical look at the relationship between the museums and other spaces/neighborhoods in which the exhibits take place, especially looking at where Hispanic and Latino communities exist in Los Angeles and Southern California. One of the aims of this project is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between accessiblity to museums and the communities that they aim to represent. We hope one outcome is that any future exhibits are located and accessible in more of the neighborhooods, community centers, and other spaces that have seemingly been left off the map.
The first map shows all the exhibit locations with two filters, one to sort by admission type and another to sort by exhibit theme. In addition Los Angeles Times neighorhoods are overlayed as a point of reference.
The second map features a data layer that shows the Hispanic and Latino population for Los Angeles County from the 2015 American Community Survey. This map begins to clearly show a discrepancy between the community which the show aims to engage with and the spaces where that community lives.
Data used for making the maps can be found in the Github repository for the project.
